Cub Scout Pack 744 Parent Guide

Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 744, located in Glen Allen, VA. We are charted by Greenwood United Methodist Church, and serve boys and girls in kindergarten – fifth grade.

Our goal is to empower elementary-aged youth in our community to make moral and ethical choices throughout their lifetimes by teaching them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Although there is a financial cost associated with Scouting, our aim is to ensure that every child who wants to be a Scout can join.

To offset the costs of Scouting, we organize several fundraisers throughout the year. Scouts who participate in these fundraisers can cover most, if not all, of the costs of registration fees and our unit dues for the following year.

Finances should never keep a child from participating in Scouting. We invite families experiencing financial difficulties to speak with the Cubmaster or Committee Chair to explore ways for your child to participate in Scouting.

Meeting Information

Unless otherwise communicated, meetings are at Greenwood United Methodist Church on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. following the Henrico County Public Schools schedule.

Lion Scouts (kindergarten) typically meet biweekly, and all other dens meet weekly.

On the last Tuesday of each month, all Scouts gather for our monthly pack meeting.

Greenwood United Methodist Church is located at:

Membership Fees

Registration Fees

The first-year cost of joining Cub Scouts is $115. This includes national and council membership fees and a one-time new member joining fee. Additionally, you may opt to subscribe to Scout Life, a monthly magazine for Scouts, for $15.

  • New Member Joining Fee: $25
  • National Membership Fee: $80
  • Heart of Virginia Council Membership Fee: $30
  • Scout Life: $15

The membership term for Scouts who joined Cub Scouts before August 1, 2023, is from January 1 to December 31 annually. For Scouts joining after August 1, 2023, the membership term runs for twelve months, starting on the first day of the month in which they joined.

Example: The membership term for a Scout joining on August 15, 2023, would begin on August 1, 2023, and end on July 31, 2024.

Unit Dues

The National and Council membership fees do not include the Pack costs of delivering the Cub Scout program to our scouts. Some of these expenses include the cost of awards and badges earned by scouts, activities such as our annual Pinewood Derby and Raingutter Regatta events, adult leader registration, rechartering and accident insurance fees, and more.

Annually, these costs average $100-$150 per Scout.

As most Scouts can offset or eliminate their unit dues through fundraising, we do not collect unit dues at the time of registration. After receiving credit for their fundraising activity, we collect unit dues during our annual recharter period (October/November).

Fundraising

To offset the costs of scouting, several fundraisers are organized throughout the year. The primary one is the annual popcorn and peanut sale in the fall. Additional fundraising opportunities, such as “Camp Cards,” are typically available in the spring.

The proceeds from these fundraising activities are applied to each scout to offset their unit dues and national/council registration fees for the upcoming year.

Cub Scout Uniform

Uniforms play an important role in creating a sense of unity and belonging among Scouts. They also provide a visual representation of the values and ideals of the organization, serving as a reminder of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. While some uniform items are required, others are optional, allowing families to choose which pieces best fit their budget and needs.

While some uniform pieces may be available from our Pack uniform exchange, new uniform pieces may be purchased from the Heart of Virginia Council Scout Shop. The Heart of Virginia Council Scout Shop is located at 8090 Villa Park Drive, Henrico, VA 23228.
